Monaco was established as a Genoese fortress in 1191, acquired by the House of Grimaldi on January 8, 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi captured the Rock of Monaco dressed as a Franciscan monk. Franco-Monegasque treaties in the 19th and 20th centuries secured its sovereignty. Monaco developed into a premier Mediterranean luxury and gambling destination under Prince Charles III, who founded Monte Carlo.
Monaco has a population of approximately 39,000 residents, making it the most densely populated sovereign state in the world. Interestingly, Monegasque citizens comprise only about 21% of the population, with French (28%) and Italian (19%) nationals making up the largest groups. French is the sole official language, while English and Italian are widely spoken. The population is 100% urbanized.
Monaco is a tiny city-state on the French Riviera along the Mediterranean coast. The entire country covers just 2.02 square kilometers, making it the second-smallest in the world. The terrain is hilly and rocky, rising from the harbor. The country has been expanded through land reclamation projects.
Monaco's culture revolves around luxury, glamour, and the arts. The Monte Carlo Casino and Formula One Grand Prix define the principality's image. The Grimaldi royal family has ruled since 1297. High culture includes the Monte Carlo Opera and Ballet. The Oceanographic Museum, founded by Prince Albert I, is world-class.
Monaco's economy thrives on finance, real estate, tourism, and gambling. The Monte Carlo Casino generates significant revenue. The principality has no income tax, attracting wealthy residents worldwide. Banking and financial services are major sectors. The yacht industry and luxury retail cater to the ultra-wealthy.
Visit the Monte Carlo Casino, watch the Monaco Grand Prix (or walk the circuit), explore the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium, stroll through the exotic gardens, visit the Prince's Palace, and admire the yachts in Port Hercules. Monaco offers a glimpse into the world of the ultra-wealthy on the stunning French Riviera.
