Lesotho was established as a unified nation in 1822 under King Moshoeshoe I, who gathered ethnic Sotho groups to resist Zulu expansionism. Facing Boer encroachments, Moshoeshoe secured British protection in 1868 as Basutoland. Lesotho achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on October 4, 1966, under King Moshoeshoe II, maintaining a constitutional monarchy surrounded entirely by South Africa.
Lesotho has a population of approximately 2.3 million, exhibiting high ethnic homogeneity with the Basotho comprising over 99% of the population. Both English and Sesotho are the official languages, with Sesotho being universally spoken. The population is predominantly rural (70%) and has been severely impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which has reduced life expectancy.
Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa. It is the only independent state that lies entirely above 1,000 meters elevation, earning it the nickname 'Kingdom in the Sky.' The Drakensberg and Maluti mountain ranges dominate the landscape. The Senqu (Orange) River originates here.
Basotho culture is rich and distinct. The Basotho blanket and conical straw hat (mokorotlo) are national symbols. Music and dance are important, with the lekolulo (flute) being a traditional instrument. Horse culture is significant, with sturdy Basotho ponies being essential for mountain transport.
Lesotho's economy depends on manufacturing (textiles and garments for export), agriculture, mining (diamonds), and remittances from workers in South Africa. Water exports through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project are a major revenue source. Tourism is growing, centered on mountain adventures.
Trek or pony ride through dramatic mountain landscapes, ski at Afriski in winter, explore Ts'ehlanyane National Park, visit the dinosaur footprints at Moyeni, and discover Semonkong Lodge's famous Maletsunyane Falls (one of the highest single-drop waterfalls in Africa).
