Liberia was founded in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a settlement for free African Americans, who established Monrovia. It declared independence on July 26, 1847, as Africa's first modern republic, maintaining its sovereignty during the Scramble for Africa. The Americo-Liberian political dominance ended with a 1980 military coup, leading to two civil wars (1989–2003) that caused widespread devastation.
Liberia has a population of approximately 5.4 million, comprising 16 indigenous ethnic groups (such as the Kpelle, Bassa, and Gio), alongside Americo-Liberian descendants (about 3%). English is the official language, while Liberian Kreyol (an English-based creole) is spoken by the majority. The population is very young (median age of 18) and rapidly urbanizing.
Liberia is on the west coast of Africa with a long Atlantic coastline. The country features coastal mangroves and lagoons, rolling hills covered with tropical rainforest, and mountainous terrain in the north. The country receives some of the highest rainfall in West Africa.
Liberian culture uniquely blends Americo-Liberian heritage (descended from freed American slaves) with indigenous African traditions. English is the official language. Liberian cuisine features dishes like jollof rice, fufu, and palm butter soup. Music and dance traditions vary among the 16 ethnic groups.
Liberia's economy relies on rubber production, iron ore mining, timber, and shipping registration (flag of convenience). Agriculture employs most of the workforce. The economy is recovering from civil wars that devastated infrastructure. Palm oil and cocoa production are growing sectors.
