Singapore was a Malay trading port captured by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, who established it as a British East India Company trading post. It became part of the Straits Settlements, falling to Japanese occupation during WWII. Singapore joined the Federation of Malaysia in 1963, but was expelled due to political differences, declaring independence on August 9, 1965, under Lee Kuan Yew, who guided its rapid economic rise.
Singapore has a population of approximately 5.9 million, presenting a highly diverse demographic mix: ethnic Chinese comprise over 74% of the total population, Malays make up 13.5%, and Indians make up 9%. English, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, and Tamil are the four official languages. The population is 100% urbanized, concentrated in a high-density island city-state with one of the world's highest GDPs.
Singapore is a city-state island nation in Southeast Asia at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Despite its small size (about 730 sq km), the country has managed its limited land through reclamation and vertical development. The island is mostly flat with some low hills. Tropical rainforest reserves are preserved in the center.
Singapore's culture is a vibrant blend of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western influences. This diversity is best experienced through its world-renowned hawker food culture (UNESCO-recognized). Chinatown, Little India, and Kampong Glam each showcase distinct cultural heritage. The country is known for efficiency, cleanliness, and multiculturalism.
Singapore has one of the world's most competitive economies. Key sectors include financial services, electronics manufacturing, petroleum refining, biomedical sciences, and logistics. The port is one of the world's busiest. Singapore is a major wealth management hub and headquarters for many multinational companies in Asia.
