Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) was ruled by ancient Sinhalese dynasties and Tamil kingdoms before Portuguese and Dutch colonization in the 16th and 17th centuries, later annexed by Britain in 1815. It achieved independence on February 4, 1948, under Don Stephen Senanayake. The country fell into a devastating 26-year civil war (1983–2009) between the government and the Tamil Tigers separatist group.
Sri Lanka has a population of approximately 22 million, comprising several ethnic groups, with the Sinhalese (74.9%) and Sri Lankan Tamils (11.2%) being the largest. Both Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages, while English is widely used in government and business. The population density is high, with residents clustered heavily in the southwestern coastal plains, particularly in Colombo.
Sri Lanka is an island nation in the Indian Ocean south of India. The landscape features coastal plains, central highlands with tea plantations, tropical rainforests, and dry zones. The central highlands include peaks over 2,500 meters. The island has remarkable biodiversity for its size. Beautiful beaches line the coast.
Sri Lankan culture blends Sinhalese Buddhist and Tamil Hindu traditions. Ancient cities like Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa showcase centuries of Buddhist civilization. Sri Lankan cuisine features rice and curry, hoppers, and spicy sambols. The Kandy Esala Perahera is a spectacular Buddhist festival with decorated elephants. Cricket is a national passion.
Sri Lanka's economy relies on services, tourism, garment manufacturing, tea exports, and remittances. Ceylon tea is world-famous. Spice exports (cinnamon, pepper) are significant. The country has faced severe economic crisis recently but has a strong tourism potential. IT services are a growing sector.
Climb Sigiriya rock fortress, explore ancient Polonnaruwa, ride the scenic train through tea country from Kandy to Ella, go on safari in Yala National Park for leopards, surf in Arugam Bay, visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy, and discover Galle's Dutch colonial fort.
