Norway was unified as a kingdom in 872 CE under Harald Fairhair during the Viking Age, which saw Norwegian exploration reaching Greenland and North America. It entered the Kalmar Union with Denmark and Sweden in 1397, remaining in a union with Denmark until 1814, and then with Sweden until achieving independence on June 7, 1905, under King Haakon VII, later discovering major North Sea oil in 1969.
Norway has a population of approximately 5.4 million, with Norwegian (Bokmål and Nynorsk) serving as the official languages, alongside Sami in the north. The population has seen increasing immigrant diversity in recent decades (about 18% foreign-born, primarily Polish and Lithuanian). Around 83% of the population lives in urban areas, concentrated around Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim.
Norway occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, known for its dramatic fjords — deep, narrow inlets carved by glaciers. The coastline stretches over 25,000 km including islands. Northern Norway extends above the Arctic Circle. The landscape features mountains, glaciers, waterfalls, and the Lofoten Islands. Norway also governs Svalbard in the Arctic.
Norwegian culture values equality, outdoor living (friluftsliv), and sustainability. The Viking heritage is celebrated in museums and festivals. Norwegian design is minimalist and functional. Literature includes Henrik Ibsen and modern crime fiction (Nordic noir). The concept of 'koselig' (coziness) is central to winter life. Norwegians are passionate about skiing and hiking.
Norway has one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world, largely due to oil and gas reserves in the North Sea. The Government Pension Fund Global (sovereign wealth fund) is valued at over $1.4 trillion. Other sectors include shipping, seafood (salmon farming), and renewable energy (hydroelectric power). The tech sector is growing.
